About The Winemaker: Marcus Goodfellow

--- Welcome. A little background information to serve as an introduction. Matello (rhymes with cello) is an Italian word meaning “little fool”. I've just always had an affinity for jesters and fools, and it seems to be a bit of a totem. Whether it suits the winery or we suit the fool is beyond me. Perhaps a bit of both.

--- We make a bit of Pinot Noir, some lovely white wines, and a touch of Syrah(co-fermented with Viognier) all from vineyards within the Northern Willamette Valley.

--- I pride myself on being a bit of a throwback in the cellar. An old French axiom says that “tradition is an experiment that worked” and at Matello our goal is to try to think outside the box of modern winemaking by exploring the methods of tradition. Renewing focus on the most basic aspects of winemaking: grapes, farming, fermentation, and patience. All Matello wines are produced from small family owned and operated vineyards and from non-irrigated vines.

--- The first Matello vintage was 2002 starting with 186 cases; now Matello produces about 2000 cases and 11 different wines, each with a uniquely different personality, reflecting origin, and the beauty of Oregon.
